Luna, the Crescent shape, is an ancient symbol for women. So outhouses had a "moon" cut into the door to mark the ladies side, while the men's side had a "sun." As time passed, the men's privies fell into disrepair and eventually were abandoned, while the better kept women's outhouses remained.
